Odd front end noises: 1990 745T 700

I have odd clunking noises coming from the front end only when backing up on wet pavement with the steering wheel almost against the lock. It feels almost as if the front wheels are sliding then stopping. When driven, the steering acts normally. The tires are 205/55WR16s and have worn shoulders on them. The car has 232k miles on it but the struts were done about 10k miles ago and all suspension components were checked. The sway bar links were also replaced at the same time as the struts. Could the tires actually be sliding or is it likely some other suspension component is shifting?
