check timing? how to? 700

I stand in front of the radiator. The end of the scale is 0(top dead center) so everything to the left(passenger side) is before top dead center. Proper timing is 12 BTDC. My 85 goes from 0-20btdc. Volvo says not to adjust. Your timing belt may have jumped some teeth. Are you having running problems that makes you want to check the timing?
