Fuel issues 200 1979

I was out delivering pizzas the other night in my '79 244. The car was double parked for about 3 minutes. When I returned to the car the gas gauge was bottomed out. The car stumbled when I tried to take off. I knew I wasn't out of gas (maybe a third of a tank left) I decided not to get gas and drove back to the shop. (My reasoning was that if I had a messed up fuel pump I didn't want to deal with 10 gallons of fuel in the tank) The car would sort of "buck" under load. On my next delivery it occured to me that I got the last drop of gas the gas station had the night before. Since the hurricanes gas has been a little scarce on the Floirda panhandle. I thought maybe bad gas and bought 5 gallons from a different station. Car seemed to run fine afterwards maybe only bucking 3 or 4 times instead of every 50 feet. Fuel pump is running a little loud. I'm not sure if it was like this before. I'm not even sure what kind of fuel pump setup this car has.... I've only owned it for a week. I know it's the D-jet but, thats about it. My other 240's have the in tank and out of tank.... does this one? I think I can hear it humming a little loudly somewhere between the engine and the tank..... is my out of tank pump going bad? Could I take the pump off my parts car? (85 240) The car seems to be doing ok but the fuel gauge is still stuck way past empty.
Thanks,
Jerry
