Heater Blower noises... what to do? 700 1989

Hi all...
Occasionally the blower makes noises on my 745T -- sometimes like it's a coffee grinder... I can't determine the reason, it can be fine for weeks and suddenly make such a noise it would wake up a Swedish troll.
I've checked some prior posts and read it might be due to some condensation (I've installed a plastic deflector on the air intake in front of the windshield soon after I bought the car 2 yrs ago to minimize snow/heavy rain from entering the car -- alledgedly this would take care of excessive moisture but not condensation).

Is there something I should try first on the blower -- cleaning, lubrication? or should I, given the car's age, envisage buying a new blower motor right away?
In the latter case, how long did it take to those of you who have done them themselves, to take out a blower motor and replace it? (I am not mechanically enclined but was able to install without instructions a complete 3rd row seat with a helper in about 3 hrs -- hardest part was to custom- cut the "vent-like" plastic trims to get the seatbelts through!!). Many thanks in advance....
