volvo not starting 700

my 760T won't start and I am stuck away from home...i'm planning on looking at it tomorrow but if someone could give me a few hints on what to look for, it would be great-

my 760 ('87) is usually kept in a garage but since I was out of town I parked it outside. Next morning, wouldn't start. When the AAA guy came though and hooked up a battery pack to it and tried starting it one of the wires near the bottom of the engine (driver's side) started to smoke and the insulation started to melt off. Couldn't see where the wire went, but just noted the color (white). Other than that, engine turns over and battery is somewhat drained but otherwise everything seems fine.
