245 hates the rain

hello all. 85 turbo wagon failed twice in the last week in heavy rains. when starting it takes a great deal of work to get the engine to catch. then runs so rough it is almost like cylinder is missing. a smell of gas too. could be i am flooding it though. yesterday after another night of rain, the same thing happened. i got her started. rough. had to keep my foot on the gas until she warmed up. skipping and spluttering and then eventually smooth. drove around town like normal. then this morning the same. this time no start at all. please help. i took her to my mechanic but he could find nothing wrong. just dried everything out and sent me on my way. the distributor cap, wires, plugs etc are all recently new. any ideas would be gratefully received. the season is changing and i need to be prepared.
