Contact reel for airbag 900 1997

I have a friend with a 1997 960 who has been told by the dealer that he needs a new contact reel, for the airbag, from the code which was obtained by the scanner. The cost would be about $400 Canadian. I have access to a contact reel from a 1994 850. Would anyone know if they were the same? Is this a hard thing to change? Thanks for any help.
