Help! AC poor idling, not working when stopped. 900 1993

Hi! I live in Colombia, where Volvo service is practically null, and I just purshased a '93 940 Turbo with 49k miles. Everrything works great, except the AC, when the car is stopped. When I'm driving, the AC cools quickly and works like a charm, but when I stop, even some seconds for a red light, it feels like the AC had been turned off. It is very annoying in traffic jams, as after some seconds the air starts coming out warm (on hot days), even with the blower at max. I can hear/feel the compressor kicking in even when the car is stopped (but in "D"). Another issue is that the car has a poor idle when the AC is ON. When the AC is off, I have a stable reading of about 700RPM, but with the AC ON the RPMs fluctuate from about 400 to 1000. In some circumnstances, the car has tried to turn off (stall?) when I try to accelerate (start going) after being stopped at a light, with the air conditioning on. Any ideas? Please be as explanatory as possible, as I am an electronics engineer, not a mechanic, so I don't have a big experience with cars. Unfortunatelly, I feel that the Volvo shop here doesn't either...
