Piston slap 700

"Makes one wonder, though, how did Volvo justify this to customers whose cars got noisy after a few months? Especially when the noise is bad enough that people assume it's a diesel and ask you to shut it off at the drive-thru so they can take your order..."

Haha ... good one. Mine is really not too noisy with the hood shut but the clack clack clack of a diesel is definitely there. And I would be horrified too if my Honda sounded like this. I don't know why Volvo couldn't get a handle on this problem.

What I learning from the stories I am hearing is even with rebuilds piston slap is coming back.

But I'm still trying to understand the mechanics behind this. IE what I asked Mcduck: "BTW why would a heated alum piston (with it's reduced clearances) "slap" when warm and not cold? It doesn't make sense...?"

A heated alum piston will expand to reduce the clearances between cylinder walls and hence reduce "slapping."
