Start Problem when Warm!Battery draining. 74' 142. 140-160 1974

Having just yesterday purchased a 74' 142 with 68K, when It was cold in CT yesterday, ~30-40 F, I had not trouble starting and restarting the car. Today, as one could imagine I went out for a Sunday drive and early in the day had no trouble starting and re-starting. This evening the car would not start, I tried repeatedly, only a click from the alternator. It started with a jump, and ran fine, several times. I put a new battery in just now, and, alas it started. One could assume that it was my battery, however not. When reviewing the 30yrs of records which accompanied the car I discovered that a warm start and battery drain had been problems since 77'!!! Is this a wiring problem with the 140? The starter is new, I have no record of the alternators replacement. Does anyone have any suggestions on this problem with warm starting and battery discharge.
Regards,
Thomas
