Or a safe car, for that matter.

There are tires or cars you may or may not have confidence in, but other than keeping fear in abeyance, all the data only serves as rationalization for that confidence.

Equipment failure is statistically the smallest determining factor in accidents, so it may be safe to assume that significant, if not enormous margins of safety are built into the equipment.

The nut behind the wheel is the biggest factor.

Ergo, I wish to maximize the thermal and economic efficiency of the mechanism, and to swap out inexpensive components that might improve that ratio.

If there were determinative statistics on the rate of successful avoidance of accidents, then I might be convinced otherwise.
