Faulty driver's side door / light switch sensor 700

I have an 86 740 Turbo wagon, and the switch that activates the overhead reading light on the inside driver's side door frame evidently is faulty or is shorted. When the door is opened from the PASSENGER side or any of the other doors the dome light activates. Not so when I open the driver's door. There is a plunger-type sensor/switch on the inside door frame that either may be misaligned, because if I push the switch down (toward the bottom of the frame, not inward the way it was designed to activate) the dome light activates. There is a thin rubber sheath over the switch and I took it off but don't see a way to remove the switch. Any suggestions on how to proceed?
