sudden death, then resurrection... help! '85 240 wagon 200 1985

I have an '85 Volvo 240 wagon, 4 speed+overdrive manual transmission. The problem is that when I am driving the car will just die flat. it dosen't peter-out and die, it just dies flat. we push it out of the way and after awhile it will start. once I sprayed some starting fluid in and it started up.

any ideas? thanks,
