steering rack maybe? 200 1986

what does it feel like when the steering rack goes bad? when i turn the wheel 1/2 turn or so it feels like something is grinding or popping or something and then its fine, until you turn back and it does it again..you can even almost hear it too from somewhere in the engine bay
