Leaking steering rack 200

My '84 245 DL has been losing power steering fluid and I found out where. On the rack on the front, I can see some shiny stuff. Looks like ball bearings. I'm assuming that some kind of cap came off. The hole appears to be a bit larger than a quarter. I'm working on larger sentences. I think maybe I need to cap it off somehow, but what I'd like to know is whether there is any serious damage likely from the exposure to who knows how many miles of road dirt exposure and of course I'd like to get some idea of how likely my steering is going to lock up while entering the freeway and if my rack is shot, is this an expensive/difficult fix?
