Constant thump in First gear, 240 M46 tranny 200 1986

1986 Wagon, 4 speed manual with OD.

Just tonight my car is making a loud rythmic thump (thump thump thump, based on speed) in only first gear. It goes away if I shift to second or step in on the clutch. Reverse is working fine. Tranny shifts to all gears ok.

I inspected the driveshaft, but all seems well there. The sound is right below me in the car. Anybody ever had this happen? I'm worried the tranny has bit the dust.
