850 wheels on a 140

"The 140/160 series used wheels with 40 mm offset. That's why fwd and late 960/90 (43 mm) wheels are the closest match. I've used 960 6.5x16x43 wheels without problems but they are very tight on the front inside because these cars were designed for no more than 5.5' wide rims."

5.5" ET40 computes to 110mm back spacing. 6.5" ET43 computes to 125.5mm.

On the 240, Virgo wheels are 96mm, and I know someone who ran 8" wheels at 116mm.

So, because the stock wheels are so narrow in both cases, and because there's additional clearance all around, you've got some margin of error to play with in fitting other wheels.

I say go with what works...and what others have proven works.
