Thank You 200

A very belated "Thanks!" to Chris Herbst for his post a few years ago on the, um, joyful job of a 240 blower motor replacement. Last March, on my way to work, just got off the freeway exit and heard the ominous "gizzzt" followed by the familiar burnt electrical smell and the heater quit. The following Sunday I tore into it, getting the center consol out and realized..."NO WAY" does that thing come out of there. Searching the Brickboard archives I found the post from Chris who adamently urged that I jerk out the dash which will make the job much easier. He was right, of course. Being a "fix it myself" person for lots of years and back yards and garages, I am not intimidated by much but this was a headscratcher. I think Art Benstein also advocated jerking the front seats. Both suggestions were life savers. Yes, it looks horrible with no dash or seats and your work area looks like a garage sale of parts, but the working room is so nice. I actually blew the resister pack and the motor (original on my '85 240DL) still ran. I located a resister pack at the Volvo dealer in Colorado Springs and a blower motor (after all the work, I wasn't going to trust the motor) from an euro-auto parts place (half the dealer cost). I'm slow and meticulous so I spent a week in my garage finishing it, getting it all back together, cleaning up the dash inerds, etc. Many thanks to Chris for his pix and suggestions, and also to Art. Great to have an experienced family at hand! Now, back to my dream of a Ford V-6, 5 speed conversion...
