Stop lights 900 1994

Hello Volvo Gurus,
I am having a problem with the left stop light on the wife's 1994 940. It will work on an intermittant basis. The bulb failure light will come on and the light will not be working. I replaced all the bulbs and did a visual inspection of all of the wiring and the bulb holder and all seems to be okay. When the bulb is not working, i can just start to remove the bulb holder and it will start working. And sometimes when driving, it will stop working and then start again so it sounds like some kind of connection problem but again the holder and wiring all appear to be normal. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated as the wife has recently received a warning from the local police.
