D24 interchangeability (D24T, D24TIC)

I've just bought a 245 D24 with "oil-in-the-water". I haven't opened the head to see if it has cracks in it, but I would like to ask you about what are the possible solutions for interchanging a D24 (if I choose not to repair the old one)

I mean I can:
a. service the engine
b. put a VW LT engine into it
but is it possible, to
use a VW TD engine?
or an intercooled one in this car?

I mean not buy serious modding, but just by putting a new engine into the place of the older one.

(dumb question): Is the turbocharger on the cylinder-head? By changing only the head is it possible to make it a full turbo or I need to do something else?
