Stupid question re: 89 blower motor resistor just prior to female plug. 700 1989

This is rather stupid so please bear with me. The blower motor in my 89 740 finally succumbed to old age. I found another one in the local yard that was living in a 90 - 740, so I removed same and cut the wires 5 inches above the plug. Got ready to install and noticed that the 89 female plug looked somewhat tiny compared to the 90..Well no sweat, I will splice in the wire that I removed with the 90. So like an idiot, I cut the orginal harness (89) up about four inches from the plug right behind what I thought was an inline splice. Surprise !!! That was not an inline splice, it's what appears to be a resistor ..solid copper wire wound around a plastic rod. My guess is this has (had) something to do with the blower motor speeds. Anyone else out there been there and done that ..and what did you do ? I can hear it now..as a mechanic you make an excellent dishwasher..any help would be appreciated. I looked in the FAQ section..but no luck..
