40 winters here in Nova Scotia?! And it's only the second floor? The '84 was patched up at least 3 times when I attacked it with the cutting wheel and welder this summer. I spent over 8 weeks of evenings and weekends cutting out cancerous rot and making patches.
Really, the price doesn't sound too bad. If that includes the necessary structural repairs, it sounds like a bargain, I'd do it. You'd still want a decent paint job on the body from California, right? That'll start around $1500 to get it done right. Once it's primed, how much more work ($$) will your car need to be ready for paint? Probably a couple hundred more in bodywork, then a few hundred to get it sprayed? (I got a quote of $2200 to repaint my 780. That's just minor dent repair, removing the trim & door handles etc, and paint work, it's a rust-free car.) However, if the rust repair/patching is not part of the initial $2500, it's a whole different ball game. I don't envy your position, I find it hard enough to give a Do Not Resuscitate order on a beater car I've only had for a year or two, let alone a trusty companion for several decades.
