Instrument cluster swap '92 940 to '91 740 700 1991

My "new" n/a 745 doesn't register anything on the temp gauge on the instrument cluster. I didn't have the right tools to get off the temp sender for the gauge when I was at the pick-n-pull, but I was able to get the instrument cluster out of a '92 944 n/a. The clusters appear physically identical and when plugged in, the one from the 940 worked except for two things.

The temp gauge still stayed at zero, so presumably that problem is elsewhere.

Most of the many warning lights across the bottom, which should light at start up, didn't come on at all. Bulb out, overdrive and one other one did light, but all those seemed to be the sort that would have a special input. So my question is: Does anyone know of an incompatibility between '92 940 and '91 740 clusters, or have I only confirmed that this 940 cluster is bad?
