86 volvo 740 can you help me figure this problem out, keeps cutting out........ 700

ok, there is what happens. i'll start my volvo up when it's cold and it will start up, now if i leave it at idle, it will run for 5 minutes and then all of a sudden die. i'll try to restart it and will crank over, but will not start. i tried to hear the fuel pump click on for 1 second, but it didn't. now i waited 2 hours before tryin the same thing again, only this time i raised up the rear end of my volvo so the wheels we're off the ground, i turned on the car, and as i first cranked the engine, i listened for the fuel pump and it turned on and ran, i did this a few times and it worked fine. then i started the car and puit it in drive and ran the car up to 60 miles per hour, after about 30 seconds, the car all of a sudden quit running. i then tried to restart the car and listen for the fuel pump , and it would not click on as i wanted. during this troubleshooting, i took off the fuel cap just to make sure it wasn't the culperate of my problem.

now here is the question, if there is a possability that the fuel filter would be clogged, and no fuel would get to the fuel pump, would the fuel pump still click on?? i changed the fuel pump relay so i know that isn't the problem. any help is greatly appreciated.

respectfully,
volve
