growling diff. 200

Hi gang.

Here's, what's I got: 93, 245, auto, ABS, 163+K with a growling differential...or something in the back. Usually not under load, but, comes and goes. Replaced fluid (old stuff smelt burnt), no notice of metal bits or anything worn. Then again, I just looked inside once I removed the diff plate. Was unable to remove drain plug. Had a machineist tap out the old one...really slick, never touched the threads. Any who, put all back together (now speedo/ odometer no work....rats), new fluid, and off we went......complete with sounds of growls. Sort of a deep heavy growl.

Questions: a) what complete rear axles are interchangeable from 200, 700, or 900 series; b) how difficult is it to repair the diff ( shade tree mechanic with enough tools to get oneself into trouble) ?

Thanks in advance.
