M46 with a mind of its own - A transplant question 700 1990

I posted a question about this 744 (118Kmiles) a few months ago and haven't done anything since then. The problem is second gear only - when "coasting" - defined as not accelerating or braking - the trans will go to neutral. I have been told that it might be a problem with the linkage hitting something, but my fear is that the 2nd gear synchros have seen better days. Any thoughts about that would be appreciated, but perhaps a more important question is: Will a M46/OD from an 85 244T fit my 744T? (I happen to have one with a rebuilt OD sitting in the garage.) Thanks -

Jim Weiss
