Windshield seal install 120-130

When I first bought the engine and other bits that are now in my 122, the seller also threw in a new windshield and seal for an extra $20. Seven years later I'm finally getting around to installing this. I've read the vclassics article and set about doing it this weekend. I decided to practice installing the seal beforehand and it is a good thing I did! The slot for the glass is frightfully tight and it took over an hour to get the entire seal worked onto the glass. I thought, when doing it for real, I could ease it on the windshield with some soapy water but am unsure how that will effect the bedding compound I'm using. The tube says nothing about solubility. Does anyone have experience with that?
