While doing some work on the '89 wagon I had occasion to remove the splash guard. To my dismay there was coolant in the low spot. I made a note to check for the source of the leak. Since I was going to do an oil change later I left the splash guard off. I thought when I was warming the engine for a few minutes before draining the oil I would see coolant dripping from wherever and I could trace it back to the source. But I saw no such thing with the engine running or while draining the oil after the warm up. The level in the overflow tank was betwen min and max. I drove the car a couple of miles that evening and about 40 miles yesterday. 20 miles one way and 20 miles back mostly on the highway. Drove it another few miles this morning. No overheating. This afternoon I noticed the level in the expansion tank was below minimum and there is coolant in the splashguard again. I don't see coolant anywhere else, at least not in the places I can see from looking down into the engine compartment. I felt around the bottom hose at the radiator and the heater return pipe at the pump and they were dry. Odometer is at 131,000 miles and I don't know if the pump has ever been changed. Sorry for all the boring details but I just thought I'd tell the whole story.
What I'm wondering is: before I haul off and buy a water pump what else should I check?
