Engine no turning over 200 1988

I was driving on the freeway last week when I heard a strange whining noise coming from the rear of my car just before the engine stopped running. I was able to coast to a exit.Thinking I was out of gas I got about 4gal of gas and tried to start the car but it will not turn over. It cranks but will not turn over. What can it be and what should I do?
