960 wagon stops moving 900 1992

I searched your site for a similar problem but have no clue. My car started making this whirring tat-tat-tat sound on acceleration after the car warms up, while driving. Even when the car is parked and I gas the engine I still here the noise coming from under ther car. After I'm driving all over town suddenly the car doesn't move but sort of coasts on acceleration. I hear a rotating sound under the car like the wheels or gears or something is trying to make the car move but not working. I park the car and let it rest for an hour or so. Start it up and car drives away fine till the car warms up and the noises return and the car stops driving. Lately, it happens more frequently so I'm scared to drive it. I can push on the pedal and hear the acceleration but the car goes nowhere. Parked for good?!? Obviously don't know much about cars just drive them, do you have a clue? Help! I love my 960 wagon.
