240 suspension questions 200

I need to address a few things with my suspension so I need to know where to start.

First, the steering seems pretty tight, not a lot of play and the car stays pretty straight if I take my hands off the wheel. It wanders just a bit but nothing excessive.

My concern are a few clunk-clunk noises when I go over some bumps. It seems like it is coming from the front but it could be the rear as well, it is hard to say.

What do I need to look for here? Better yet, since the car is getting old, should I just replace things as routine maintenance? I am the second owner and there is about 100K on the odo and the car is 20 years old. What should I replace? Struts? Shocks? Bearings? I am a novice here so my mechanic will most likely have to perform these tasks but I would at least like to know what to tell him. He is pretty good about putting on parts I supply and I have found that I can buy new ones a lot cheaper than what he usually quotes. Perfect example...$400 for a fuel pump from him, only $125 for a NOS one on Ebay.

Thanks in advance
