Thermostat 700 1991

I just replaced the thermostat in my 91 N/A 745 last night. I had a suspicion that it was stuck open, and just as I supected it was. However, when I went to pull it out of the housing, the guts of the old thermostat just fell out. I've replaced alot of thermostats, but I have never seen one come apart like that. Good thing the small parts didn't get ingested. Has anyone else seen this on their cars or ones they were working on?
