Clutch Returen Spring? 200 1993

Right after I was under my '93 240 to adjust the clutch cable, I happen to look at an M46 gearbox with bellhousing that I have been tripping over for years. I noticed the M46 had a return spring hooked to the clutch release fork where the '93 M47 had none. Why don't the later models have a clutch return spring or, more importantly, am I missing one?
