I have a 1997 960 wagon with about 165K miles on it. It's not my daily driver and sometimes will sit for 3 or 4 days without being driven. I've been having a problem with it lately, and I have an idea of what it might be, but want to get some opinions before I start buying and installing parts.
After it's been sitting for a while, it'll start right up every time. But then it won't restart if it shut it off. For example, if it sits for 3 days and then i go to the post office around the corner, it won't start when I try to leave the post office. But if I leave it there and walk home, it'll start when I come back for it. Yesterday I moved it from the driveway in front of the house to the back door to load some stuff. It was running for about 3 minutes. After loading up, it wouldn't start. All the lights and chimes came on, but nothing happened when I turn the key. I checked the battery and it reads 13.68 volts at both the posts and the terminal connectors, but I tried jump starting it anyway. No joy. After about a half hour I gave up and left it there. When I came back about 6 hours later, I tried again and it started right up. I drove it back around to the driveway and shut it off. I immediately tried again to start it. And again, nothing. Warning lights and chimes, but nothing when I turn the key.
I did have the PNP switch go haywire a few months ago and it behaved in a similar way. But there are no warning lights to indicate another PNP problem. My next thought would be the starter solenoid. But I'm not eager to go after it. Does anybody have some thoughts they'd like to share?
