On the other hand.... 200 1988

I also have a daughter, away at school, with a Volvo I gave her. Nice to know she's as safe as we can make them, right? :-)

Anyway, I have always(!) changed engine oil to synthetic ASAP after getting another car (always used, at mileages from 74,000 to ~145,000 miles), have been owning Volvos since the early 1970's, both myself, my wife, and recently my daughter (so that's a lot of cars), and have never experienced any seepages or leaks, not even briefly initially.

I've always thought that the leaks sprouting (despite rational about loosening dirt or varnish, etc.) was just a popular myth. But I don't want to dispute with those who have experienced it -- maybe it happens occasionally?

Also possible: I've always* used only one brand of synthetic oil, and I know that certain synthetics have different effects on seals than others (swelling or contracting them, etc.). So maybe it's the brand I use? Anyway, the stuff I use is AmsOil (p/n AMO), 10W-40, year-round. That's my $0.02.

[ * To be perfectly honest, not quite always ... back in 1973, when I started using synthetic, I used some brand called "Xenex" -- but they went out of business soon after, so I switched to AmsOil only a couple of years later, in the mid-'70's.]

Have a great holiday.
