Cool Air 1800

I have a b20 1970 1800s.

The air intake consists of a black box...(that seems to rubb against the bonnet/hood.)

As this is pretty close to the top of the engine bay I imagine the air is pretty warm on hot days. Does anyone have any ducting tips or otherwise too provide a cooler air flow?

I am considering cutting a hole in the bulkhead (near the radiator) and running some ducting to allow the freer cooler flow of air to the carbs.

Am I mad? Is there an easier way? Any experiences?
