removing OD from M46 200 1981

Hi all, I have the 81 wagon in the garage, and I'm driving the 81 244 for the winter (it has wheel well rust, unlike the wagon).
I have a new speedo cable and an OD overhaul kit from IPD, and so I want to start to disassemble the OD.
The 245 front wheels are on ramps, and I stalled it out in reverse, so hopefully there will be no grab into the OD from the transmission.
Does anyone have any tips on how to just begin to remove the OD?
