I have finally completely rebuilt this '88 780 flood car. We rebuilt the engine and transmission and afters many months found all the harness issues. The car is finally considered transportation.......until this week. I am still on my first tank of gas and have stated to run rough and then stall or attempt to stall after running for 15 minutes or so. The car acts like it is not getting fuel. I replaced the fuel filter and it was full of crud. (this is my second fuel filter replacement since we repowered the car) When we started, we drained the fuel tank, replaced the intank pump and screen. I had a problem with the primary fuel pump and replaced it , but have had two primary pump failures. We chocked the failures up to "Autozone" poor quality non Bosche parts.
When the problem occurs, it will start and run for a few seconds and then act like it is starved for fuel. I can do this over and over and limp home. At some point, it just will not run. If I leave it for a few hours it will start and get me home with no trouble. When I check for fuel supply, I get lots of fuel flow to the injectors and it runs fine. I can not repeat the problem until I drive the car for a while.
I plan to pump out all of the fuel in the tank again and refill the tank. Here is my question;
If the tank pump is not running, will the car pull enough fuel supply to run? Isit possible that I am getting enough supply without running the intank pump? I really don't want to pull that pump again. I have not blown a fuse to the pump and beleive that the pump is running, but can not explain why I am loosing fuel supply. Open for all sugestions.
