tachometer / idling problem 700 1988

Hello Everyone,

I have a 1988 5-speed 740 GLE wagon and for about a month, my tachometer has registered artificially high rpms. By that I mean the tach has been reading about 1200 rpm when it idles—when it should show about 800. In fourth gear, at 45 mph, the tach should be reading about 2000 rpm, but it’s been reading about 3200 rpm for the last month.

Today, a new development has taken place. The tachometer readings have corrected themselves to where they should be, but the idle is oscillating between 1000 rpm and 300 rpm. The oscillation is quite pronounced and moving up and down every 3 seconds. It was falling so low that I thought the motor would stop in traffic, so I’m having to use the accelerator to keep the idle up at stoplights.

Can anyone give me some ideas on what is causing this problem?

Thanks,

Megan
