Transmission's "Winter" mode. 900 1997

Be careful using the transmission's "Winter" mode. It creates quite a bit of heat in the transmission and could overheat the fluid. 2 independent Volvo mechanics have told me that it should be used only if absolutely necessary. It locks the tranny in 3rd gear; just think of trying to start from a stop in 3rd gear in a manual transmission car. Pretty hard on the clutch. Anyway, just be careful using "W" and make sure the transmission fluid stays clean and is changed at proper intervals.
