What is this suppose to connect to? 200 1980

In the process of doing the heater core in my '80 245 DL.

After I popped the dash cover off, I found this connector buried on the drivers side of the car:

Simple questions: What is it? What is it for? What is suppose to connect to it? Is this something very important (although I'm guessing not since the car has done fine this long with out it.)

Thanks as always.
