does the kickdown cable change shift times or just downshift only? 200 1986

hey guys, i just finished up replacing my bad auto tranny in my '86 with one i got from a friend that he said was good...i got it all hooked up and it shifts very smoothly and everything but it seems to shift a little late....2nd gear at about 25-28 mph...3rd gear between 35-40 mph and then overdrive will kick in around 50 at the lowest (better when warmed up) I'm not the best at adjusting the kickdown cable but i thought i had it at about the right spot... could this adjustment affect the regular upshift pattern or just when downshifting?
