Recomendations for Non-Volvo New Used Car 700 1990

I drive a 90 744 which has served me well for the past 15 years. But now I am looking to buy a new used car. I am looking for several key features: four doors, good A/C, manual transmission, 30+ mpg, and of course relatively good safety and high reliability. I wish I could consider another volvo but I really don't feel that it is within my price range and gas consumption requirements. I was hoping that someone here might know what kind of car a confirmed Volvo driver would find passable.
