Water Pump Woes 200 1982

I noticed a small antifreeze leak coming from the O-ring below the head.
So, naturally I figured I might as well replace the water pump.
I've done this before, but this time I cannot get the the rear of the water pump to mate with the engine. I've tried the block of wood, but I still
can't thread the bolts on. I know... I should have gone with the
Hepu or GMB, but all I could get today was an ASC from AutoZone.
It looks fine and seems to fit well. Even the Volvo dealer didn't
have his $130 water pump in stock.

Are there any tricks of the trade to help line up the holes?
