1997 960 lurching at high speed? 900

When driving my 1997 960 sedan, she lurches back and forth as the speed reaches around to 65 mph as the engine runs about 2500 rpms. Engine light has come on and I assume that this has something to do with the O2 sensor or something with the emission control. I step on the gasoline traveling at 65mpg, plenty of power but as soon as I let off the pedal it lurches back as if there is play somewhere? Transmission fluids ok, no leaks there. When in park, the engine sputters when the rpms reach around 2500. Possibly bad spark plug? Fuel filter? Any ideas, suggestions would help to diagnose this problem.

Thanks,
Jeremiah
