Tappet Replacement for 94 960 Wagon 900

Anyone with experience replacing the tappets (hydraulic lifters or cam followers) in the 1994 960 (B 6304 G) engine. My main concerns are as follows:
1) In removing the top half of the cylinder head to expose the camshafts & tappets, the manual recommends using a couple of tools that allow the to cylinder head to come up evenly. I would think you could just remove the hold-down bolts a little at a time to accomplish the same thing. they also want you to use these tools to push the head pieces together before securing with the bolts. 2) Will I be able to pull out the tappets using a suction cup, magnet, or just a pair of pliers? Your comments and anything else I should be aware of will be greatly appreciated.
