Alternator? 200

Last night while crossing the Brooklyn Bridge, the alternator, parking brake and oil pressure lights started glowing dimly. I checked my voltmeter and it was reading 10 volts. The headlights and dash lights were dimming, but I made it home to NJ (about 50 minute ride) thinking that my alternator belt finally gave out. This morning I checked and it was still in place and pretty tight. The car started right up but was still reading about 12 volts and wouldn't go up when I revved the engine. I picked up a new alternator, am I giving it a good guess? The car has about 180K on it with the original alternator still in place. Is there any way I can check it before I remove it from the car?
