Got chains? 200 1989

Here's my two cents worth:

I use 4 non-studded snow tires on my '8 244GL daily driver with an 80lb. bag of tube sand over the rear "hump" when snow is forecasted.

For really bad weather I put on my snow chains with cleats to handle any deep snow or ice. I have never been stuck even when an ambulance, metro bus and suvs where sliding down a steep grade. I just weaved through the quagmire.

Definitely use four snows. You want steerablity as well as traction/braking.

The tube sand adds weight where I need it and if I get stuck I just throw some sand under the wheels or use my oem rubber floor mats (thats what they are designed to do.)

Chains are a pain in the rear to put on and I have thrown a link during a storm (I keep spare links in the trunk after the first and only episode) but if you need to get around during a bad storm they will get you through anything.
You will need to keep you speed down to under 35 mph to prevent excessive wear on the links/cleats. Take them off when the pavement has been cleared.
