charging system problem... 200 1988

Okay, I'm having a problem with my alternator/charging system. I replaced my alternator and tested the voltage after I put it in. Everything read okay, 12V when the cars off and 14V when running. I took it out for a drive, then my car started dying. I get back home and check the voltage coming out of the alternator and it now reads 12V while running and looks to be not outputting any charge. I know my battery has tested good and all the grounds on the alternator are well grounded. I'm guessing my problem is not the alternator but something else that is causing it to fry. My starter solenoid looks to be in bad shape although i have had no problems with the car starting. Could this be frying my alternator? Is my new alternator toast? any help would be appreciated.
