Failed emissions here in Ma. have questions?? 200

Hi All, I have an 89 245 DL that's been running great for 278,000 miles. I needed to have it inspected by the end of Nov. and of course I waited till the end of the month to do this! As Murphy would have it, the car started to idle rough last week! Has plenty of power but the exhaust pipe is very black and it smells like it's running very rich. I checked the usual things like plugs and wires, theromstat seems to be okay as it has plenty of heat. I've tried checking most of the wires that go to the sensors and injectors. I even tried replacing some of the stuff like AFM and fuel pressure regulator. A friend suggested it may be the O2 sensor or the temp sensor but I don't have any spares from my stock of used stuff. I took it for the inspection as I still need to use the car and figured a "reject" sticker is better than a expired one. Sure enough it failed with high HC and the CO was over 900! Passed NOX okay? Anyone have an idea of where to start looking for this problem? I tried doing a search but there was so many threads on this it would take quite a while to read them all.
Thanks for any help!
